This is due to the enlargement of the European Union, the adoption of the Euro and most importantly because of the birth of a foreign policy that goes beyond the mandate of the Union�s first pillar. The idea of a shared sovereignty and supranationality are some of the concepts that are difficult to understand from the American perspective. Furthermore, the unilateral anti terrorist crusade that the US put forth after 9/11, the European Union moved from simple economic competitor to an adversary in the global domination strategy. This explains why, in the American power circles, there was satisfaction in view of the European process problems of the last years.Desde un comienzo entusiasta de apoyo por la integración europea en los años 50, los Estados Unidos pasaron después de la Guerra Fría a una actitud de ambivalencia y duda acerca del rumbo de la Unión Europea que apostaba por la profundización, la adopción del euro, y sobre todo por el desarrollo de una incipiente política exterior y de seguridad, más allá de las competencias estrictamente incluidas en el llamado primer pilar. El concepto de soberanía compartida y la supranacionalidad son algunas de las dimensiones difíciles de entender para la óptica norteamericana. Después del 11 de septiembre y la puesta en marcha de la nueva doctrina de seguridad unilateralista en Washington, la UE se convirtió de un simple competidor económico en un posible adversario en la estrategia de dominio mundial.
