Summary: Biodiversity is a profoundly political issue. Why is access and exchange of genetic resources so important and how does it relate to the controversies about intellectual property and those related to the international environmental and commercial treaties? The answer to these questions highlights a set of rules, international interrelations and new actors that determine the �international policies of access to genetic resources�. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) establishes that biological diversity is subject to national sovereignty. Will access to biodiversity and benefit-sharing be determined by a multitateral system or bilateral agreements?
