Summary: This work analyses post-emancipation relations between families and relatives, both consanguine and affinal, among the population of African descent in the coffee-growing municipality of Juiz de Fora. The articles seeks to demonstrate, by means of records on marriage, birth and baptism, the importance given to these ties by the emancipated slaves, who sought post-abolition legal recognition of their unions and those of their children.
