Summary: This article presents a summary of larger scale research dealing with the legal and sociological effectiveness of human rights for sex workers operating in the Santa fe neighbourhood of Bogota, since there is full awareness that all human beings, regardless of their race, gender, nationality, religious beliefs or the work they do, have inherent and inalienable rights and should be able to enjoy them to the full. When emphasising sex workers rights, it should be made clear that they (just the same as any other person, regardless of the work they do) merit the same treatment and protection of their rights. Whilst being a sex worker may not be seen favourably by society, it is a social reality which must be faced and dealt with; sex workers should enjoy rights just like any other human being and must thus be protected in the same way. This forms the basis for debate about the effectiveness of such protection.
