Summary: The paper is a letter the author sends to the participants at the Congress, celebrated in Granada in May in honor of Peter Häberle, and in which, not only he apologizes and regrets not being able to attend this event, but he also briefly develops the issue initially proposed for his intervention at the Congress: the European identity. Concerning this, the author doesnt analyze the issue in a juridical and historiography perspective, but he adopts a critical perspective: in his opinion, on the one hand, Law is not able to explain the subject completely, and, on the other, in the history of Europe there are many contradictions, from which it is complicated to build a common future. So the question is not so much from where we came, but where we would like to go; which, at the same time, implies a volitional element of decision.
