Summary: The lack of integration of moriscos into the Spanish society remained the same during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs and Charles I. Philip II promoted the Ordenanzas of his predecessors (1567); soon afterwards, there was an insurrection in the kingdom of Granada run by the moriscos who had sought refuge in the abrupt Alpujarras. They rejected some of the very few accepted cultural elements and appointed Fernando de Válor (Aben Humeya) king. After being defeated by don Juan de Austria (1571) they were dispersed throughout La Mancha and Extremadura. A few years later the Relaciones were written and in some villages the presence of these recently arrived moriscos starts being dated.
