The documents produced by the synods constitute the principal source for the study of the practice of writing within this group since synods formed the main channel of communication between dioceses and they produced rules and regulations which were binding on the clergy. Even in the earliest texts priests were called on to draw up written documents which would help themin the performance of their duties and, at the same time, provide bishops and archdeacons with the information they required to carry out their pastoral mission. Later regulations contain interesting data regarding the double use of these documents, which came to be both instruments of professional use and a means of controlling the clergy. There was a constant increase in the demand for written texts un the part of the synods, which must have necessarily resulted in the growth of literacy among the parish clergyEn el contexto de la Galicia bajo medieval, el clero constituye el grupo social con mayor cultura y predisposición al uso de la escritura tanto en lo personal como en lo profesional.
