Since 1986, Costa Rica has had a total number of candidacies per election that exceeded the expected number in the race for the single post of president. This number has increased after 1998 when difficulties of coordinating from supply and demand worsened. The article analyzes the elections from1986 to 2022 and explores some dimensions that account for the origin and development of said excess and its effects on the party system.
