Summary: This study explores conceptual approaches to work informality from different perspectives, as a debate during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to propose an interdisciplinary definition of the phenomenon, taking advantage of the theoretical instruments of Law, Economics, and Sociology. An analysis of the integrated concept of labor informality is proposed in comparison with Brazilian Law No. 13,982, of April 2, 2020, which created an emergency aid due to the pandemic. A bibliographic review in each field of knowledge was conducted. Labor informality consists of the set of economic and professional activities not covered by the legal system and developed in an alternative and residual context to the formal labor market, whose subjects' actions, in general, are tolerated by the State, and guided, essentially, towards ensuring survival. Finally, the interdisciplinary study of informal work offers theoretical bases to understand the demands of vulnerable groups in times of profound socio-economic destabilization.
