Summary: The purpose of this article is to determine the state of the representative institutions of the peninsular Kingdom(s) at the end of the Catholic Monarchy in order to identify the basic characteristics of her "constitution". For this purpose, it presents a synthetic description of the evolution of the Cortes and its Deputation throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with special emphasis on the different stages into which the life of those institutions can be divided until their definitive disappearance (1834). It concludes with some critical suggestions regarding the historiographical use of the term "constitution" when referred to the Spanish Monarchy before 1808.
