AB  - The article analyzes the different meanings that the word “tolerance” adopts, contrasting the classical notion with the illustrated. It is argued that from the French Enlightenment, the term acquires a strategic political use. The case of Voltaire is paradigmatic. It turns it into a misleading rubric that serves as an instrument for the secularization process. In this way, enlightened tolerance announces the genesis of secular constitutionalism
