Summary: Drying out wetlands for agricultural purposes and some current water uses may have ancient origins, uses that overlap water acts and their transitory provisions over time. Nowadays, the environmental concern for wetlands has created a special legal treatment and the implementation of restoration projects. In this paper we analyze the case of the Cañizar wetland, drained in the XVIII century, whose waters are divided among different villages according to some royal by-laws which date back up to 1742, and if those waters rights are still in force in relation to those restoration projects to be executed on the Cañizar wetland.
