It has moved beyond its natural vocation to seek unity within the federal State to highly contentious political issues or those that pose problems of governability, such as an economic crisis, public security challenged by organized crime or compromised public health. The elements common to each country’s regulations are analysed in order to identify the best way for the institution to work in federal systems, as well as to determine what its future might hold.La intervención federal lleva más de doscientos años de existencia desde su aparición en la Constitución norteamericana de 1787, la que ha tenido una clara influencia en su recepción en las constituciones de los países federales de Latinoamérica. Durante ese tiempo, en Argentina, Brasil y México se ha hecho uso y abuso de la institución, y ha trascendido de su vocación natural para procurar la unión en el interior de un Estado federal a cuestiones marcadamente de contienda política o que constituyen problemas de gobernabilidad, como puede ser una crisis económica, la seguridad pública cuestionada por la delincuencia organizada o bien la salud pública en riesgo.
