The confrontation between the civil power and the ecclesiastical one got worse with time, until it reached the rupture. The core of the disagreement was not religion, nor the Church itself, which everyone respected, but the dispute for power between the two authorities. This text tries to explain this rupture, putting the focus of attention on the actions of the nuncio to the Holy See and some Spanish bishops.En 1820 el clero español acató la orden de la autoridad civil de jurar la Constitución. Este acto fue en realidad una formalidad, pues la jerarquía eclesiástica rechazó de plano la política reformista del régimen constitucional y acusó al liberalismo de atentar contra la Iglesia y la religión. El enfrentamiento entre el poder civil y el eclesiástico se agravó con el tiempo, hasta llegar a la ruptura. El núcleo de la desavenencia no fue la religión, ni la propia Iglesia, que todos respetaron, sino la disputa por el poder entre ambas autoridades.
