Representation and political participation are associated with the right to citizen participation in political life, a law that has been consolidated in Latin America, a region where dictatorships and censures have been continuous, and as such, the 21st century has allowed us to improve, incorporating other related rights, such as the fundamental right to be elected. Extremely important in this area, in the Peruvian case, is the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court, which in recent years has established criteria that allow defining the essential content of political rights, as well as its framework of protection through constitutional processes.Mediante este artículo se exponen una serie de reflexiones en torno al desarrollo de la representación y la participación política en el marco de Estado Social y Democrático de Derecho. En este sentido, se inicia abordando los aspectos conceptuales de estas instituciones, analizando los diversos conceptos que ofrece la doctrina. La representación y la participación política se asocian con el derecho a la participación ciudadana en la vida política, derecho que se ha venido consolidando en Iberoamérica, región donde las dictaduras y censuras han sido continuas, y como tal, el siglo XXI ha permitido ir perfeccionando, incorporándose otros derechos vinculados, como es el derecho fundamental a ser elegidos.
