Religious freedom was not granted, because toleration did not implied freedom of religion, and freedom of conscience for non-conformists was only in the private sphere. That is why the national church of the English is another case of religious tolerance based on the reason of state. As elsewhere, it was religion that ended most wounded in all these pendencies, which left a strengthened State, that is, a government of men and not of God, settled in human sovereignty rather than in the primacy of divine laws; a government of men’s rights to believe in God and worship Him according to his conscience and will, of a God served in the human wayEn el siglo y medio que va desde el reinado de Enrique VIII al rey Guillermo, la política religiosa anglosajona se movió entre la intolerancia, la comprensión y la tolerancia; son tres momentos no necesariamente cronológicos, pero que describen una secuencia reiterada en la historia del protestantismo anglicano.
