Summary: Nowadays, all the European Union "new generation" Free Trade Agreements incorporate a chapter related to "trade and sustainable development", whose purpose is to renew the commitment of the Parties with various international standards for the protection of the environment and the core labour standards. However, this chapters suffer from a series of structural limits that result in a deficient practical implementation, which is why, in the present article, the various improvement proposals identified by the doctrine and by the European Commission for an effective protection of the environment and the most basic labour rights in the European Union commercial relations with third States and regions will be analysed.
