Summary: This paper analyzes the legal situation in Spain of the prevention and defense of buildings against wildfires, particularly in the Wildland/Urban Interface (WUI), defined as the area in which the built-up land comes into contact with the woodland. First, it analyzes the legal problems (competencial and practical ones) faced by the WUI regulation, and then it reviews the applicable provisions included in the European Union regulations and in the State laws (forests and natural environment law, building law, urban planning and civil defence). Finally, the solutions offered by the legislation of four regional governments (Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia and Galicia) are examined. It concludes, among other aspects, that the WUI regulation is dispersed in a lot of legislations, and with different territorial scope, and that it is difficult to determine the obligations of the owners of the buildings in relation to fire protection measures.
