Sumario: The exponential involvement of China in Latin America has triggered a debate about the possible consequences of this may have on America’s hegemony in the hemisphere. Even though China does not seem ready to challenge Washington’s primacy in the region, its actions are affecting the balance of power. From a Neorealist theoretical approach, this research evaluates the economic and military ties between Beijing and the region, in order to answer the question: Is China undermining US hegemony in Latin America? It finds that China has emerged as an alternative source of financing for development projects and infrastructure, promoting the image of Beijing as a role model in the international arena, and hindering, meanwhile, Washington’s exercise of power. Military ties with the countries in the region have helped Beijing to strengthen its position in the global balance of power, but these are not being targeted to weaken US hegemony in the short-term.
