Sumario: Cancer is one of the primary causes of general mortality in the world today, with Latin America showing a marked increase in the number and severity of cases. Despite the recognized carcinogenic features of many environmental and occupational contaminants that make it possible to point out the relationship of exposure to these substances, myths and debates about their origin persist. A list of proven carcinogenic substances and industrial processes is presented. Emphasis on the importance of prevention includes the role played by epidemiological surveillance.
