Sumario: One of the most controversial debates about the nature of Franco’s State relates to its totalitarian or authoritarian character. The political repression of the press in its early days reveals itself as the political key to understanding the regime. This paper analyzes an unpublished episode of censorship that affected Arriba, the official newspaper of the “single party”. Its director was ousted from his job for a short period of time and then covertly prosecuted, in a judicial process at which the remaining newspaper directors were obliged to testify. The case was counted as a victory for the Foreign Affairs Minister, who regained control over the press.
