Since the liberal/libertarian tradition has targeted various egalitarianisms starting from utopian socialism, the most representative contemporary egalitarian doctrines �equality of outcome and arithmetical equality� are also assessed here. The investigation eventually allows us to build a theoretical framework for politics that rests upon three kinds of equality: formal equality, ideological equalities, and normative equality.Este artículo pretende contribuir al esclarecimiento de la equívoca noción de igualdad. Lo hará mediante la glosa y crítica de las principales tesis sobre el tema que sostuvieron algunos destacados autores pertenecientes a la tradición de pensamiento liberal. Una vez netamente distinguida la igualdad política de la igualdad sustantiva, aquella será el objeto de análisis. Dado que el blanco de la tradición liberal han sido los diversos igualitarismos surgidos a partir del socialismo utópico, es obligado el recurso al contrapunto que suponen las doctrinas actuales sobre la igualdad de resultados y sobre la igualdad aritmética.
