In the present work we intend to approach punitive practices in childhood, inside state and private institutions, between 1870 and 1919. With that objective, we will be based on the meaning acquired by legal concepts as custody and deposit in the institutional framework , which served for the goverment of the minority in the precoded law (combining and overlaying protection, education and punishment).A fines de siglo XIX, el Estado exhibía un notable déficit de establecimientos correccionales para menores, vacío llenado en buena medida por los buques, talleres y escuelas de la Marina Nacional. Como continuidad de una tradición colonial, las Defensorías de Menores y el Asilo de Huérfanos administrado por la Sociedad de Beneficencia de la ciudad de Buenos Aires utilizaron a la fuerza naval como ámbito de castigo para jóvenes huérfanos y desobedientes. En el presente trabajo nos proponemos abordar las prácticas punitivas en la infancia dentro de las instituciones estatales y no estatales, entre los años 1870 y 1919.
