The financial upheaval initiated in 2010 brought to the fore the consequences of that contradiction. This brief paper aims at underlining the urgency of giving the Economic and Monetary Union its definite shape so that the contradiction fades away.El euro debía iniciar el camino conducente a crear, con el paso de unos años, una sólida Unión Económica y Monetaria. Sin embargo, los im- pulsores de la moneda única pasaron por alto las notables diferencias reales existentes entre los países miembros y sobre todo, el gran pro- blema que podía derivarse de contar con una moneda única frente a políticas fiscales nacionales. La crisis financiera que se desató en 2010 puso de relieve las conse- cuencias de ese olvido.
