Summary: |
The importance of public opinion reemerged with the launching of the press at the
beginning of the 19th century. Political issues were aired through this media during the
whole century. The acts and the attitudes of individuals and authorities were exposed to
public opinion in newspaper columns, editorials, correspondence and announcements. In
this context, we analyze how the use and abuse of the word honor by journalists,
newspaper subscribers and contributors throughout the country revealed the conduct of
political and ecclesiastical authorities, as well as the discourse and practices that these
authorities used to legitimize their positions of power in Bahia and in the Empire. |
