Summary: The European integration process has undergone a number of transformations throughout its history. The most important ones have to do with the debate over the enlargement of the Union and with the strengthening of the integration process in order to seek a better economic and political convergence. This is why new mechanisms have been created that have made it possible today to have a monetary union that encompasses twelve countries and that the Europeans can enjoy the so called Justice, liberty and freedom space proclaimed by the Amsterdam treaty of 1997.
