This establishes a continuity between classical theories of freedom and the contemporary approach that will propose answers for the new problems of freedom in the world today, examples include the relinquishment of freedom for the sake of security or the very use of freedom to suppress it itself; it is hoped to reflect on what freedom is in contemporary democratic societies. This research is conducted under the presumption that the liberal theory of freedom contains elements to safeguard it from increasingly authoritarian democratic models. This paper uses a comparative perspective, establishing and interpreting the meaning of freedom for each of these authors from a historical, sociological and philosophical context.Este trabajo realiza una síntesis de seis autores que desarrollan las ideas liberales sobre la libertad -tres de ellos son clásicos y, los restantes, contemporáneos-. Así se establece una línea de continuidad entre las teorías clásicas de la libertad y las contemporáneas que nos permitirá aproximarnos a las respuestas propuestas a los nuevos problemas de la libertad en el mundo actual, tales como la renuncia al ejercicio de la libertad en nombre de la seguridad o la utilización de la misma libertad para su supresión, e incitar a una reflexión sobre ella en las llamadas sociedades democráticas contemporáneas. Esta investigación es conducida bajo la preposición que la teoría liberal de la libertad contiene los elementos para la salvaguarda de la libertad frente a modelos democráticos cada vez más autoritarios.
