Summary: |
In the last decades, many scholars have studied public opinion as one of the most
important influences in criminal policy and legislation. The main purpose of this study
is to analyze how public opinion and public judgment about sexual offending differ in
content and resistance to the influence of the mass media. This research was designed as
an experiment with three observations and assignment of the participants (299 college
students) to the treatment and control groups. Our results show that the use of
deliberative polls can change the attitudes of the participants, and that the deliberative
process seems to have a mediating effect of the influence of the media, which means
that this type of polls constitute a potential instrument in the development of criminal
policy in Spain. |
