This essay tries to state which the circumstances were that originated the image of Alfonso XII as �King Soldier�, as well as presenting several elements of the propaganda mechanism which contributed to stand out this legitimate characterization to the point of achieving to set it into the popular imagery. To that effect this would be contrast with several types of primary sources such as: historical documentation, press, poetic and iconographic representations, essentially.Alfonso XII de Borbón (1857-1885) ha sido recordado con el sobrenombre de �el Pacificador� por su faceta de �rey militarista�. Una parte importante de esta caracterización regia se debe a la estrategia propagandística promovida por Antonio Cánovas del Castillo y por los círculos alfonsinos, a lo que se sumó un acontecimiento relevante con consecuencias muy positivas para la monarquía alfonsina: el fin de la guerra carlista (1872- 1876). En este artículo se trata de dilucidar cuáles fueron las circunstancias en que se fraguó la imagen de Alfonso XII como �rey soldado�, así como mostrar algunos elementos de los mecanismos propagandísticos que contribuyeron a resaltar dicha caracterización legitimadora hasta el punto de que esta lograra enraizar en el imaginario colectivo.
