Notwithstanding the management of this sort of property and the technology transfer that it implies must be the cornerstone of a country which wishes to improve its innovation level. The study of typology of contracts having intellectual property rights as their main subject matter is the first step in order to achieve a better understanding of this area and their implications, not only in the technical field, but also in the economy and ultimately in the whole society. This article deals with different categories of technology transfer agreements, starting with the concepts of technology and technology transfer and furthermore analysing each category from the point of view of different legal systems.La concesión de derechos de propiedad intelectual y su procedimiento ante la oficina nacional o regional han sido siempre una de las principales materias de estudio de la academia y uno de los principales objetivos de los empresarios. Sin embargo, la administración de este tipo de propiedad y la transferencia de tecnología que ella implica deben ser uno de los pilares fundamentales de un país que desea elevar su nivel de innovación. El estudio de la tipología de los contratos que tienen como objetivo principal los derechos de propiedad intelectual es el primer paso para alcanzar una mejor comprensión de esta área y sus implicaciones no sólo en el campo de la técnica sino en la economía y en última instancia en la sociedad en general.
