Given their definition and legal requirements to obtain their protection, AOs arise as special distinctive signs widely protected. Indeed, because AOs are indicators of a specific origin which creates a special and prestigious good, and since their ex-officio registration, these signs are enforced even before the issuance of the Administrative Act which declares its protection. Therefore, they are set apart from Indications of Source, as the latter do not have a particular place or time of creation and the identified good does not need to have an added value that justifies exclusive appropriation. AO are especially protected since, while they belong to the National Authority and identify a collective reputation, the prohibition to using or registering a sign that reproduce, contain or resemble them is absolute and not limited to likely violation of Owner´s rights.Las denominaciones de origen (DO) son entendidas como una especie de las indicaciones de procedencia. La Decisión 486 de la can encuadra a las DO y a las indicaciones de procedencia dentro de las especies de las indicaciones geográficas. Atendiendo a su definición y a los requisitos legales exigidos para obtener el reconocimiento de su protección, las denominaciones de origen resultan ser signos distintivos especiales con un amplio ámbito de protección. En efecto, por consistir en un indicador de un origen específico que genera en un producto una cualidad y reputación, y dada su protección oficiosa, la DO es protegida aun antes del acto que así lo reconoce. Por esta razón, se diferencian de las indicaciones de procedencia, pues éstas no encuentran un momento particular de creación del derecho ni un valor adicional merecedor de apropiación exclusiva.
