AB  - Political parties are indeed the main political actors in a democracy. No one
could doubt that the correct performance of political parties strengthen the people�s
government regime. In Colombia the rule applies with no exceptions.
The first part of this article, analyzes the origins of Colombia�s political
parties. The study is based on the cleavage theory, which states that political
parties result from real social revolutions. Furthermore, typology and
financing of political parties are studied.
Subsequently, this paper studies the Colombian party system. The critical
analysis of the apparent bi-partidism demonstrates that the party system
changes and reflects the reality of national democracy.
