They help in the efficient use of resources, introducing new processes and supporting the adjustment of the economic fabric to changing conditions in the economic environment. This paper makes a descriptive analysis on self-employment in several European countries by age, level of education and sector of activity. These concepts are analyzed from a gender perspective which is relevant taking into account the significance that women represent in managerial initiatives.El autoempleo es un indicador relevante del nivel de actividad emprendedora en un país, refiriéndose a aquellas personas que deciden constituir su propia empresa, más que a la búsqueda de un trabajo remunerado. Los emprendedores son los agentes del cambio en una economía de mercado, favoreciendo el uso eficiente de los recursos, introduciendo nuevos procesos y en general contribuyendo a adaptar el tejido económico a las condiciones cambiantes del entorno económico. En este artículo se realiza un análisis descriptivo del autoempleo en una serie de países europeos atendiendo a conceptos tales como la edad, nivel de formación y sector de actividad respectivamente.
