Summary: The Modern Age is an age of important political, social and cultural change: the Modern State is born, and with it, a new understanding of the kings authority. These factors have an important effect un the elaboration and expedition of royal documents, and, very particularly, on their social function. Up to now, there have been few studies that have analysed this complex reality. Diplomatics, which la the science of written documents and theirhistory, has been traditionally associated with the Middle Ages. In this paper we propose new perspectives and a renovated methodology for the study of these documents
